T R E K - ( 1 5 D a y s )
Following
a high trail parallel and north of the Leh-Lamayuru - Kargil
- Srinagar Highway, this fascinating trek goes through ancient
villages and monasteries and over small mountain passes
to end at the ancient capital of the Sham kingdom - Temisgam.
Day 01: We welcome you on your arrival at the Indira
Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi and escort you
to your hotel where you stay overnight.
Day 02: Take the morning flight to Leh and check
into your hotel. Afternoon free to wander around the bazaars
and relax. A couple days in Leh is strongly advised due
to the high altitude.
Day 03: We visit the ancient monasteries of Shey
with its enormous state of Buddha and Thikse one of the
most important Gompas in central Ladakh which has some beautiful
wall paintings besides gilded statues of the Buddha. In
the afternoon we drive down to the famous Hemis Gompa in
a secluded grove of poplars. Return to your hotel for the
night.
Day 04: Visit the secluded Stok royal palace the
Spituk monastery and the Tibetan Camp of Choglamsar before
returning to your hotel for the night.
Day 05: Leh - Phyang - 3600m / 11,808ft. A one hour
drive to our take off point for the trek towards the village
of Taru at 3700m / 12.136ft. Stopping to visit the Phyang
monastery we later continue on a leisurely trail towards
the hamlet of Taru where we set up camp for the night.
Day 06: Taru over the Taru La pass - 4200m / 13,776ft.
to Nimo at 3700m / 12,136ft. 5 hours. The trail steeply
climbs towards the first pass of the trek, and then gently
descends to the spread out village of Nimo that stands a
little ahead above the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar
rivers. Camp overnight.
Day 07: Nimo - Nie - 3800m / 12,464ft. 5 hours.
The route passes the large village of Basgo once the capital
of lower Ladakh also known for its impressive monastery
and dominated by striking ruined fortresses. The trail passes
numerous Chortens as we continue to our campsite at Nie.
Day 08: Nie - Likir - 3600m / 11,810ft. 4 ½
hours. The trail now enters a desolate and barren landscape
as we head towards the small spread out village of Likir
with its well maintained and ancient Gompa built on a hillside.
The views are quite impressive as we near the village and
green terraced fields appear. Camp near the village.
Day 09: Likir - Yangthang - 3600m / 11,810ft. 5
hours. The trail now steadily climbs towards two mountain
passes through an arid and moonscape terrain - Pobe La at
3700m / 12,136ft and the Charatse La at 3800m / 12,464ft.
Both these passes afford extensive views of the Shyok ranges
to the north and the Zanskar range to the south. Yangthang
is quite a well to do village with green fields and a primary
school. Camp a little ahead of the primary school.
Day 10: Yangthang - Hemis Shukpachu -3600m / 11,810ft.
5 hours. Taking a diversion from the trail a bit ahead of
Yangthang we visit the ancient Ridzong monastery hidden
among the hills and one of the more isolated monasteries
in the region. Returning to the main trail we head on to
Tsermanchen La at 3850m / 12,628ft and crossing it descend
to the serene village of Shukpachu. This peaceful village
has a small Gompa and rich fields with sparkling brooks
and mature cedar trees (shukpa means cedar ). Camp overnight
in this enchanting setting.
Day 11: Hemis Shukpachan - Temisgan - 3700m / 12,136ft.
5 hours. The trail goes through an amazing balcony like
path carved out from the ochre rocks. Crossing two passes
at 3710m / 12,170ft and 4000m / 13,120ft, we reach the fertile
village of Ang. The trail now goes over a bridge and turns
into a regular path till it reaches the spread out village
of Temisgam with its large white washed houses ringed in
by green fields. Camp near the village.
Day 12: Drive west to the ancient monastery of Lamayuru
and then head back east to visit the most well preserved
monastery in central Ladakh - Alchi. Reach Leh by evening
and check into your hotel.
Day 13: Fly to Delhi in the morning. Afternoon at
leisure. Catch your late night / early morning flight to
your next destination.
